Dream Catchers are Fun and Easy to Create!

Apr 25 2009

Dream catchers are simple projects and candles closely identified with the Native American. The original web designed craft of the Ojibwa was utilized to promote natural wisdom. These Native Americans see Nature as a life instructor. This Native American craft is made of twigs, feathers and sinews and are woven by the Ojibwa people since the ancient times. They were crafted by the old people to protect newborn children. It is believed that it gives infants a peaceful and beautiful when it hung above the cradleboards.

The history of this original craft of the Indian tribes traces it roots to a vision of an old spiritual leader of the Lakota Indian tribe. Legend has it that this revered leader had a vision of Iktomi appearing in the form of a spider. Iktomi spoke to the spiritual leader about the beautiful ways of the cycle of life while spinning web using the spiritual leader’s willow hoop, feathers, beads and horsehair.

When Iktomi finished with his narration, he gave the web the spiritual leader. The completed dreation was a perfect circle with a hole at the center. Iktomi instructed the elder to exhort his people to use the web for them to reach their goals in life by making good use of the ideas and dreams. Believing in the spiritual leader, the elder knew that the web can filter the good ideas and dreams from the bad ones as the latter will not pass through the web.

These Native Americans believe that dreams fill the night air. The good dreams are believed to be clear and know the path to the dreamer. They descend upon the dreamer to the feathers. Any sudden change of these feathered is believed to an indication of yet another passage of a good dream. Bad dreams, on the hand, are considered an errant and confusing. Bad dreams are not able to find the right path through the dream catchers and are finally trapped there until sunrise when they evaporate with the morning dew.

The very first crafts were woven using the red willow twigs as frame. The thread used comes from the stalk of the nettle. The twigs used as web frame are collected as soon as they are fresh and are left to dry in a circle mold to achieve the spiral shape they prefer depending upon the intended use.

These ancient projects also became popular in the other Indian tribes like the Lakota, Navajo and Cherokee. Nowadays, it is practically made in every Indian tribe not only in the US but also in Canada. You can expect to locate some authentic native craft in any events or festivals of Indian tribes. So popular are these Indian crafts that they have been seen on television. It was featured in one episode of Star Trek-Voyager series.

However, dream catchers have also become its bane as cheap imitations started to enter the market. The American attempts of dream catchers are now being produced by non-natives and even producers from as far as Asia. For anyone who would like to buy the authentic ones made by Native Indian craftsmen may have to purchase them online.

Besides many small children in nurseries and decorative candles, these Native Indian crafts are now commonly displayed in walls, headboards, windows and even in the rear view mirrors of our cars.

Considering Making Soap Bubbles & Buy Soap Making As Our Hobbies

Mar 31 2009

The art of making soap bars has been, in a measure, known and followed for many ages, proving a source of industry and advantage to various nations and individuals. It may therefore interest some of our readers if we attempt to trace its origin and progress as indicated by the writings of the earlier authors. Pliny, for instance, the Roman historian, informs us that the art of manufacturing soap is the invention of the Gauls, and that the best article made by them was a combination of goats’ tallow and the ashes of the beech-tree. They also seem to have been acquainted with both hard and soft soaps.

The Romans eventually acquired the knowledge of how to make glycerin soap from the Gauls, by whom this branch of industry was, with their conquests, soon spread over Europe. Whoever may have been the originators of soap making, the Romans were undoubtedly familiar with it. Galen, at least, mentions it in his works, and confirmatory of this statement, we may add that a soap maker’s shop, with its utensils and products, was discovered among the ruins and ashes of Pompeii, which was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the first century of the Christian era. Soap was often used by the Romans as a cosmetic, for Pliny tells us that soap, with which the Germans colored their hair red, was imported into Rome for the use of the fashionable ladies and their gallants in that city. This cosmetic was probably tinged with the juice of a plant.

Moving on from talking about how to make your own soap and before we recur further to less remote times, we will endeavor to answer the question, “What substitutes were employed previous to the invention of soap?” Soap, both hard and soft, as it is well known, is produced by the union of the fats and the alkalis; by hard soap, we mean such as have soda, and by soft soap is understood that which has potassa for its basis. Water alone will not remove oily substances from any surfaces to which they may adhere, but a solution of soap, being always more or less alkaline, though its constituents may be united in their number of equivalents, will, nevertheless, render the oil freely miscible with water, so that it can be easily erased. A similar effect is produced by using a mixture of water and lixivious salts. The gall of animals and the juice of certain plants, also possess the property of removing dust and dirt, It does not, however, appear that gall was employed by the ancients, but it is certain that in washing they used saponaceous plants.

Candle Turorial: How To Increase The Flame Of Your Decorative Candles

Nov 30 2008

Once you are into candle making hobby you start looking for more information about interesting processes of candle making, about different approaches of using scents and dyes, about various tips and tricks.

Today, I would like to share one of my useful tricks about candles. Had you any ideas that you can make decorative candles burn with a large flame? And the funniest thing is that all you need additionally is a small piece of paper (the thinner, the better). Of course, you will need a candle and here those big scented candles work best.

Steps you needed to take in order for candles to burn with a bigger flame is really simple. Firstly, lit the candle and let it burn while you continue. Then (while the candle is burning), take a small piece of paper. Roll it into the small tube, so that candle wick would be able to fit it. Tear the part of this paper tube so its length would be aproximately the same length as the candle’s wick length.

Moving forward, you should mount your paper tube on the candle wick. Therefore blow out the flame of the candle and try to fit the paper tube on the candle wick. Press the tube a little bit, so the paper would go deeper into the melted wax. You will notice that paper absorbs melted wax (and the thinner paper is, the more wax it can absorb).

EventuallyInitially paper will burn of and the candle flame will get smaller. However, when fire will reach the paper mixed with wax it will start burning with a bigger flame.

Knowing how to make you candles burn with bigger fire, might not help you with candle making. However, this new knowledge of candles might be really useful, when you need more light and electricity is gone. However, please note that candle will burn faster and if your main goal is to enjoy the dim candle light, you should not use this trick.

Candle Making Business Information

Nov 30 2008

The beach is always well-loved by many people. This is a picture of peace and serenity. “Beach” as a theme is really common for parties, fashion, videos and… candles? Yes, it is possible. The candle making business is now getting experimental about the designs to use. With candles usefulness, it could also be made in such a way that it could fit into the modern way of living- that is trendy and comfortable.

Trendy- bracing some dashes of style, candles could be very good accessories for the home. In order for you to bring that fun atmosphere of the beach, why not bring that sand and sea mood at home?

These candle making tips may let you try more options:

1. Find a container that would best hold into form the candle you have in mind. Make sure that you will be using non-flammable containers. Use glass if available, they could show the gel, choose something with a touch of aqua blue.

2. Plan to have the wick like about 1.5 inches from the sides and dribble a spot of hot glue on the bottom of the container you used.

3. Stick the wink on the hot glue and let it cool down for a few minutes. Don’t use cotton as core wick, zinc is the best choice.

4. For the gel, cut the gel wax into small parts or cubes and place it into a container and heat it up. Make sure that the heat is not too hot or too cold. 200 Fahrenheit could make it melt well.

5. Maintain the advised temperature until such time that the wax would melt and turn into a smooth and a bit thick liquid. For more attractive effects, you could use coloring materials that would create a better effect to the product.

6. Do not use coloring materials that would make the gel lose its transparency. Ignore the use of water-based and paste dyes as a combination. They do not complement each others components.

7. Pour ? of essential oil or gel scent for more effects that would make the candle “marketable”. When pouring such, add more wax cubes if there is a “cloudy” effect on the liquid.

8. Scents you use must be alcohol-free. For the aquatic theme, choose a “cool” scent than those which are fruity or musky.

9. When you are about to pour the candle liquid on a container, set a level mark and make sure that the liquid will not pass over it. Put some seashell beads, aquarium gravel, sand, aqua blue glitter, pebbles, and others. Do it by layer.

10. Make it a point to preheat the container (150 degrees). This would minimize the presence of bubbles that may ruin the form of the finished product.

11. Then pull up the wick and be sure that it goes up in the center of the candle. Let the candle cool down for 3-4 hours. Trim the wick at about ? inch.

12. You could vary the designs of your aquatic candles by mixing and matching colors and objects like starfish and clouds, sand and stars, boat prints and pebbles are just a few of the numerous possibilities.

The sea, sand, bikinis, waves, hats, flip flops… the beautiful sights one summer afternoon could be reflected by your home made candles. This could set off as a mere past time but entrepreneurial opportunities may knock on your door. candle making business are easy to make, affordable, convenient, and they could be those attractive possessions of your home.
